Why did the Hawkeyes fire head coach Todd Lickliter
IOWA CITY Director of athletics Gary Barta announced during a news conference Monday afternoon that Todd Lickliter will not be retained after three losing seasons on the Hawkeyes bench.
"As I looked at year four and looked to see if we were in a position to compete, I felt the pieces weren't there and we needed to make a change,'' Barta said.
Hired by Iowa days after being named by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as its Division I coach of the year in 2007, Lickliter failed to match the success he had while building a 13161 record during a sixyear tenure at Butler.
Iowa finished 1319, 1517 and 1022 in Lickliter's three seasons on the Hawkeyes bench, including a 1539 mark in Big Ten games. The team's 22 losses this season and the 19 losses in the 200708 season are the most by Hawkeyes basketball teams in a single season.
In addition to the oncourt struggles, his tenure at Iowa has been marked by offcourt problems.
Including the release of guard Anthony Tucker from his scholarship last month, seven scholarship players have left the Hawkeyes program since Lickliter was hired, including four after the 200809 season.
Those exits left Iowa with a roster filled with freshmen and sophomores, a group that won consecutive games just twice during the recently completed season.
Barta said Lickliter will be paid the remainder of his contract $2.4 million in three installments over the next three years. He said he broke the news to Lickliter during a brief meeting Monday and that Lickliter, who did not attend Monday's news conference, took the news the way he expected he would.
"He acted professionally, as he did in every contact we've had in his time here,'' Barta said. "This was not a decision we took lightly.''
Barta said the search for a new coach will begin immediately and will follow esstnetially same process with the same criteria he used when he hired Lickliter in 2007.
