Fifth Avenue South could benefit from high
"As far as we can tell, men haven't shopped for 4,000 years," joked Robert J. Gibbs, president of Gibbs Planning Group, during a Thursday morning presentation to Fifth Avenue South about 50 business owners.
But some things do change, and one of them might be the look and feel of Naples' celebrated main street.
Fifth Avenue South property owners hired Gibbs' group to conduct a study about how to energize their area, which is struggling in the sluggish economy and in the face of increased local competition. The study results are expected to be released in late September.
Thursday's meeting gave business owners a chance to hear some general information about revitalization, including what works and what doesn't.
What doesn't work, Gibbs counseled, is offering products that consumers don't want to buy. The average consumer truly wants to patronize independent, locally owned stores, he said, but there's an ease and comfort associated with large chain stores that acts like a gravitational pull for many shoppers.
That's true of tourists, too. There's a myth that vacationers want to buy different brands while they're traveling, but the research proves otherwise.
Also, tourists "upshop," Gibbs said. The principle is regarded as controversial, he said, because historic districts don't like the idea of having large chain stores.
But those popular stores benefit all the area's vendors, because they draw dollars.
The thought of making a merchant mix on Fifth Avenue South was appealing to Christine Cammas, owner of Femmes Je Vous Aime, a Fifth Avenue lingerie, sportswear and swimwear shop, and presentation attendee. She recalled shopping on Paris' famed ChampsElysees, which is home to many large, famous brand name stores.
Also, she hopes there could be a way to attract more locals to the street. There's a perception that Fifth Avenue is expensive, but "we need to change that idea," she said.
Beth Ressler, owner of Wind in the Willows, a women's clothing and gift shop on Fifth Avenue, said she was pleased to hear Gibbs' report that the downtown shopping district is held in high national esteem.
While there's also a perception that Naples is in a recession, Gibbs said, he believes that the area's downturn will be shorter than average.
Ressler was also interested to learn that a significant percentage of shoppers like to shop later in the evening. The new parking garage on 8th and 6th would have been ideal for adding some new larger nationals or complimentary mix of uses. I rememebr that being proposed by the CRA Director a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, Gary Price, Penny Taylor and Bill Wilcomm exercised great stupidity which cost us tax payers millions unnecessarily. And the architect, Andrea Clark Brown, was paid a rediculously high amountand should have guided the Council and City management more professionally. Shame on her. Stupid, Stupid people.
Big retailers pay for location, as defined by the traffic. Maybe there's more traffic down there than is visible, but I'd be a little sheepish trying to pitch such a sleepy, if picturesque location, to the kind of people who understand the logic of putting Walgreens across the street from CVS, Wendy's next to BK and Micky D, and WalMart next to Lowes.
They won't be shy about telling you how much they care about ambience. Look at our stripmall littered wreck of a homogenized American landscape and tell me they put any value on aesthetics.
Good job, Mr. Gibbs. Half the town could have told the merchants the same thing for nothing. But making it happen? That's where the real work begins.
Fifth ave, cheap louis vuitton, is way overpriced and boring. The quality of products, and service is okay at best. And it is no longer the only place to go here. There are plenty of other options in the area now. Also a lot of people have left Naples, for cheaper places to live. I can't remember how many people I know of that have moved to North Fla, or the Carolinas, or elsewere for that matter. I also belive the same group of people trying to revitalize Fifth ave, are responsible for it's slow demise. Certain Business owners on Fifth ave, and Third street as well, think because they own a business down there, that they own the street as well. I believe the majority of the people that still go to Fifth, and Third, do so because they live very close by. You can drive down there any nite of the week now, there's nothing but a small dinner crowd, and a few old grey hairs sitting around eating ice cream. salads were extra and everything else the portions were really small and the food was so non descriptive.
I will not be going back anytime soon. Even when they offer "Summer Deals" it sucks.
As for big retail company coming into the area you are kidding me those companies look at areas of influence where they can pull population from, and they also look at the uses that will compete for those dollars; Fifth is too close to the mall; and Mercado there is no large chain that will look at the population radius and bring their store to that location; assembly of land would also pose a challenge so far Mr. Gibbs (in my opinion) has not generated any "new ideas."
As I drove down the main drag in Santa Barbara, Cal. last time I was there, I saw the Gap. I was thankful that 5th Ave hadn't sold out, like Sanibel saying "NO" to McDonalds.
I was working for my dad in the late 70'searly 80's when the landlord kicked his store out on Fifth to replace it with an investment firm, poor 5th Avenue has had a hard row to hoe, but it lives and learns.
The entertainment part of 5th is the most exciting, for a city that used to roll up the sidewalks at 9. Third Street already sold out to Tommy, and then let a commercial establishment totally change one of the only local landmarks we had into something unrecognizable. Let 5th have some license to boogie, and it might just take care of itself.

Party members and officials will not be allowed to have memorial meetings or luxury funerals after they pass away, according to the latest notification on promoting funeral and interment reform released by the State Council and the General Office of the CPC Central Committee on Thursday.
Party members should allow their bodies to be cremated after death in regions with little arable land, said the document, adding that the families of the Party members should understand and support their decisions.
Officials and Party members should take the lead to follow an ecological way of burial like sea burial and the ashes should be scattered, it said.
