I FEAR for young people. Sometimes it seems like this generation has become guinea pigs.
They've had to suffer university tuition fees and all the associated debt, whilst a poor jobs market means they are unable to service that debt and many graduates are sitting in Jobcentres.
But now, in 2010, universities will have to turn down capable British students because of a funding crisis caused by careless treatment of the economy.
Before tuition fees and the recession, further education was the natural step in advancing your career but a 22 per cent rise in applications for the 2010 intake means talented youngsters see their skills go to waste.
Each university place is funded through taxation and fees,[url=http://www.sport.fr/sponsoring/uggpascher.html]ugg hommes[/url], but with public sector cuts, universities are warning they can't afford to pay the shortfall because of their own budget constraints.
It used to be that business, investors and charities would soak up some of the financial impact of a student surplus but, as we all know, organisations have tightened their purse strings in the wake of the recession.
The Scottish Funding Council has confirmed they will fund 77,000 places but already there have been 89,000 applications to study.
Although Scottish ministers announced an extra 10million to support universities, this will only account for 7,500 students.
